Skype & Fring tussle
News is running all over the internet about a sort of war between the major voip service providers, Skype and Fring, which have several users all over the world.
Fring updated its iPhone app for the iOS 4 inorder to include two-way video calling over Wi-Fi as well as 3G. This move is in response to Apple’s Facetime. However, Skype, which is provided by Fring through its mobile apps, has not reacted well to this move as they feel that it has violated their API Terms of Use and End User License Agreement.
According to a blog post, Skype’s VP of legal, Robert Miller, has said that for some time now, their brand and reputation with their customers were getting a beating due to the misuse of their software by Fring. Citing an example, he said that on Friday the support for video calls over Skype iOS 4 was withdrawn by Fring causing further damage to their brand and disappointing their customers who expect a lot from Skype.
These allegations by Skype were immediately counterattacked by Fring in their blog post which said that Skype was cowardly blocking Fring as they were afraid of open mobile communications.
The news of their tussle is making rounds all over the internet with several people already giving their opinions on it.
